Quiltmaking has long been associated with the culture of tiny Prince Edward Island on Canada's east coast. Nearly twenty years ago, Sherrie Davidson launched her Heirloom Quilt Survey, dedicated to preserving the history of quiltmaking on Prince Edward Island. Quilts of Prince Edward Island-The Fabric of Rural Life presents the results of Davidson's work in a lushly illustrated, scrapbook-style volume, complete with excerpts from diaries and news stories, and discussion of the patterns and techniques that have been passed down through families. Full-colour photographs throughout, and chapters on early settlement, the Acadian/Cajun quilting community, and extended visits to some of the Island's best-known contemporary quiltmakers, make this an engaging look at rural life and craft alike.

Marie Carrington is running from a host of bad memories. Broke and desperate, she's hoping to find safety and sanctuary on Prince Edward Island, where she reluctantly agrees to help decorate a renovated bed-and-breakfast before it opens for prime tourist season. Seth Sloane didn't move three thousand miles to work on his uncle's B&B so he could babysit a woman with a taste for expensive antiques and a bewildering habit of jumping every time he brushes past her. He came to help restore the old Victorian--and to forget about the fiancée who broke his heart. The only thing Marie and Seth agree on is that getting the Red Door Inn ready to open in just two months will take everything they've got. Can these two wounded souls find hope, healing, and perhaps a bit of romance on this beautiful island? Step into the Red Door Inn, a lovely home away from home tucked along the north shore of fabled Prince Edward Island. It's a place where the wounded come to heal, the broken find forgiveness, and the lonely find a family. Won't you stay for the season?

Through the centuries, women have used textiles to express their ideas and political opinions, creating items of utility that also function as works of art. Beginning with medieval European embroideries and tapestries such as the Bayeux Tapestry, this book examines the ways in which women around the world have recorded the impact of war on their lives using traditional fabric art forms of knitting, sewing, quilting, embroidery, weaving, basketry and rug making. Works from the United States, Canada, Latin America, Asia, the Middle and Near East, and Oceania are analyzed in terms of content and utility, and cultural and economic implications for the women who created them are discussed. Traditional women’s work served to document the upheaval in their lives and supplemented their family income. By creating textiles that responded to the chaos of war, women developed new textile traditions, modified old traditions and created a vehicle to express their feelings.
